CHARACTERS Looking for George 107 Looking for GeorgeI bought this because I was looking for books on modern post war Romanian history There didn't seem to be that many and a lot were out of print or expensive And then I found this book which has been well worth the read and uite an eye opener into some of the things that went on in Romania It's focused on the individuals rather than being a concise political history for obvious reasons of course but these are the things that shouldn't be forgottenIt's a kind of travelhistorymemoirs book by English woman Helena Drysdale accounting details of three trips to Romania and a friendship with a particular Romanian George Cupar She met him during her first trip in the late 70s when she was just 19 She'd gone on a driving holiday with some uni friends They met George and he ended up travelling

CHARACTERS Looking for George 107 Looking for GeorgeLooking for George is a non fiction book about a young English woman traveling with an open minded Romanian man in communist Romania and her search for him after the 1989 Revolution The book reflects the descent of the Romanian people into the living hell of the Ceausescu Regime and explains some of the idiosyncrasies of the modern Romanian character Having interacted with foreigners without government approval the book's main character George is interrogated by the Securitate's police and subjected to the psychiatric therapy reserved for the State's political opponents The author’s story shows how the Romanian communist government controlled everybody; even in part the country’s religious institutions I recommend this book for anybody w

CHARACTERS Looking for George 107 Looking for GeorgeI first read this book whenit came out in the early 90's It is a true fascinating and often shocking account of a woman's search for a man she knows has died because of her in Romania Helena goes looking for George shortly after the fall of the Ceaucescu regime and articulately exposes the horrors and impact of that ghastly era on the minds and bodies of the people of Romania I could not put this book down
